The Lower Dolpo Trek offers a perfect introduction to the remote Dolpo region, combining natural beauty, cultural richness, and high mountain adventure. This trek takes you to the famous Shey Phoksundo Lake while crossing challenging high passes.

The journey begins with flights to Nepalgunj and Juphal, followed by trekking through traditional villages, forests, and river valleys. The highlight of the trek is Shey Phoksundo Lake, known for its turquoise waters and dramatic setting.

Crossing Numa La and Baga La passes adds adventure and stunning Himalayan panoramas, making this trek both scenic and rewarding.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu

    Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, you can rest or explore the vibrant streets of Kathmandu. In the evening, a short briefing will be conducted to introduce the trek and explain the logistics.

     
     
  • Day 2 : Preparation and Permit Arrangements in Kathmandu

    This day is dedicated to final trek preparations. You will complete permit formalities while also having time to shop for any missing gear. A detailed expedition briefing will be conducted by your guide to ensure you are fully prepared for the journey ahead.

     

  • Day 3 : Fly to Nepalgunj

    A scenic flight takes you to Nepalgunj, a bustling city in the western Terai region. The change in landscape from hills to plains offers a unique perspective of Nepal’s geography.

     

  • Day 4 : Fly to Juphal (2,475m) and Trek to Dunai (2,140m)

    An early morning flight brings you to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo. From here, you begin your trek with a gradual descent through terraced fields and small settlements to reach Dunai, the administrative center of Dolpo.

  • Day 5 : Trek to Ankhe (2,896m)

    The trail follows the Thulo Bheri River, passing through lush forests, suspension bridges, and narrow canyon sections. The landscape begins to feel more remote as you move deeper into Dolpo.

     

  • Day 6 : Trek to Sulighat (3,100m)

    Today’s trek leads you into Shey Phoksundo National Park. The route includes a mix of forest trails and rocky paths with occasional glimpses of waterfalls and wildlife.

     

  • Day 7 : Trek to Phoksundo Lake (3,611m)

    You will reach the breathtaking Phoksundo Lake, famous for its deep blue waters and dramatic cliffs. This is one of the most iconic locations in Nepal, offering incredible photographic opportunities.

  • Day 8 : Acclimatization Day at Phoksundo Lake

    A rest day to help your body adjust to altitude. You can explore nearby villages, visit monasteries, or hike to viewpoints overlooking the lake.

  • Day 9 : Trek to Phoksundo Khola

    Leaving the lake behind, the trail becomes more rugged and remote. You will walk along narrow paths carved into cliffs with stunning views of the valley below.

  • Day 10 : Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (5,000m)

    A challenging day as you ascend toward higher altitude terrain. The landscape transitions into a barren, trans-Himalayan environment with wide open vistas.

  • Day 11 : Trek to Shey Gompa (4,126m)

    Crossing high ridges, you arrive at the sacred Shey Gompa, a spiritual center of the region. The surrounding Crystal Mountain holds religious significance for locals.

  • Day 12 : Exploration Day at Shey Gompa

    Spend the day exploring the monastery and surrounding areas. This is a great opportunity to experience local culture and enjoy the serene environment.

  • Day 13 : Cross Kang La Pass (5,350m) and Trek to Namduna Gaon

    One of the most demanding days of the trek, crossing a high pass with panoramic Himalayan views before descending to a remote village.

  • Day 14 : Cross Sela La Pass (5,090m) and Trek to Saldang

    Another high-altitude pass leads you into Saldang, one of the largest settlements in Upper Dolpo, rich in Tibetan culture.

  • Day 15 : Rest Day in Saldang

    A well-deserved rest day to explore the village, interact with locals, and recover from previous high pass crossings.

  • Day 16 : Trek to Yangze Gompa

    A short but culturally rewarding hike to Yangze Gompa, one of the oldest monasteries in the region.

  • Day 17 : Return Trek to Saldang

    Retrace your steps back to Saldang while enjoying the vast landscapes and peaceful surroundings.

  • Day 18 : Trek to Namduna Gaon

    The trail gradually descends through arid terrain dotted with traditional villages.

     

  • Day 19 : Trek to Sibu

    A scenic trek along river valleys with changing landscapes and remote settlements.

  • Day 20 : Trek to Jeng La Phedi

    You move closer to another major pass, camping in a high-altitude environment surrounded by mountains.

  • Day 21 : Cross Jeng La Pass (5,090m) and Trek to Tokyu Gaon

    A challenging but rewarding crossing with spectacular views before descending to Tokyu village.

  • Day 22 : Trek to Dho Tarap

    Descend into the beautiful Dho Tarap valley, known for its wide open landscapes and cultural richness.

  • Day 23 : Trek to Tarap Khola

    The trail narrows into deep gorges as you follow the river downstream.

  • Day 24 : Trek to Dunai

    Return to Dunai through familiar trails, marking the near end of your trekking journey.

  • Day 25 : Trek to Juphal

    Your final trekking day with a steady ascent back to Juphal.

  • Day 26 : Fly to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu

    Flights back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. Transfer to hotel and rest.

  • Day 27 : Leisure Day in Kathmandu

    Free day for relaxation, shopping, or sightseeing.

  • Day 28 : Final Departure

    Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
